Well, at least one person has a PC. Our EiC Lance Ulanoff is there on his Ultrabook!
I'd say 80% Apple laptops in the rows around me.
And the lights dim. Let's get this show started!
He seems to be smiling a lot more than at previous events. Even waving.
"We've got some really cool stuff to show you. It's an amazing time at Apple."
Retail update first, with pics of the new Barcelona store.
The store, one of the largest in the world, was 2.5 years in the making.
And now the Barcelona store gets a video of its very own.
Lots of Gaudi buildings cut into the video. Apple really likes associating itself with great art.
That would be me, rocking the Macbook Air and iPhone 4S.
Tim Cook is back. "We now have 380 stores around the world, 13th country on Friday -- Sweden."
83 million customers last quarter.
On to the Mac. "We've had a very busy summer for the Mac, with Mountain Lion."
7 million Mountain Lion downloads -- the fastest selling OS X of all time.
Cook touting the Macbook Retina: "our notebooks now rank no 1. in the US in marketshare for the last 3 months."
Mac has seen 15% growth over the last year, whereas PC saw 2%.
Now the iPad, "driving the post-PC revolution at a breathtaking pace."
Last quarter, 17 million iPads sold
that'll be a new record for iPad sales. More than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire PC line.
"Yes, we are in a Post-PC world." -- Tim Cook.
84 million iPads sold, in total, through June 2012. "Our competitors have taken note ..."
As I pointed out last week, only 70,000 Android tablets are activated a day. Apple activates something like 186,000 based on last quarter's numbers.
iPad had 62% market share a year ago -- but the latest data shows 68% market share. "It actually went up!"
91% of tablet web traffic comes from iPad. "I don't know what these other tablets are doing!"
"They must be in warehouses, or store shelves, or maybe in someone's bottom drawer!" Cook gets feisty.
94% of the Fortune 500 are testing or deploying iPads, Cook says.
I think I have 3 Android tablets in my drawer right now.
(of course, I review them)
Cook seems more confident and effusive in his speaking style. Figure he's been taking lessons.
But to be fair, the Nexus 7 is pretty awesome.
On to the App store, which recently crossed 700,000 apps.
250,000 of those apps have been tailored for iPad.
90% of all apps are downloaded each and every month, with the average customer using 100 apps. "the store has been an absolute revolution."
Another milestone: "last quarter we sold our 400 millionth iOS device."
"Today we're taking it to the next level, making a huge leap -- very exciting news to tell you about iPhone."
and Phil Schiller is here to give the news.
"It's really neat to stand here and see all the Apple logos on your computers," riffs Schiller.
